Since late October, an unexplained disease has emerged in the southern region of Congo (DRC), presenting symptoms such as fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and body aches. From October 24 to December 5, 376 cases were diagnosed and 131 deaths were reported, with a fatality rate of 35%. The cause remains undetermined, and the disease is spreading.
Located in the southern city of Lubumbashi, the Congo (Kinshasa) office of SDLG frequently operates in the affected area. To address the escalating epidemic and keep staff safe, SDLG team members Zhang Kai and Liu Haiyang visited the Sino-Congolese Medical Cooperation Center in Lubumbashi. They conducted training and exchanged insights on infectious disease prevention and control with Chinese medical experts, including Dean He Yufeng.
During these exchanges, medical experts offered preventive advice, such as adhering to "five dos and five don'ts," mosquito control, avoiding crowded places, wearing masks in public, and regular indoor disinfection. This guidance has deepened the office staff's understanding of the epidemic and clarified measures for preventing common viruses and diseases.
Next, the office will implement the recommendations of the medical experts, making epidemic prevention and control an important task of the office, and manage it in a systematic and regular manner. At the same time, safety training will be conducted for company personnel who are about to go to the DRC, ensuring that colleagues can go to the Congo and return to their home country safely.
